WW FORECAST FOR Monday 6th February – Sunday 12th February 2012
ISSUED Sunday 5th February 2012 2245GMT
SEVERE WEATHER RISKS OVER THE PERIOD- None
Monday 6th will see an area of high pressure over the North Sea affect most parts but a weak low pressure will affect the SE initially. A few clear periods inland overnight giving a frost with icy patches away from coasts but mainly cloudy with some freezing fog patches in the east . An area of mainly light sleet or rain will affect parts of the Midlands and south east at times. A slow thaw of lying snow will continue. Generally clearer skies by afternoon with sunny periods in the north. As temperature falls by evening icy patches are likely and a slight to moderate frost inland across most parts of the UK away from the coasts and the SW. Temperatures by day up to a mild 10C in the far south west but more generally 3-5C and 1C in the Highlands
Tuesday 7th looks likely to see a cold night inland with a moderate frost away from coasts and some freezing fog patches too inland in the Midlands especially but less cold in the SW, far west and NW, the high pressure ridge will move away east allowing a chilly E’ly flow into the SE. It will be mainly dry with a few sunny spells by day inland across northern areas but a few light wintry showers may affect the south east and the eastern coasts. A continuing slow thaw of any lying snow by day . Temperatures reaching 3-5C in most areas but the far south west may see 6C though more like a rather raw 0-1C in the SE in a fresh ENE’ly wind and just -1C in Highland Scotland and hills elsewhere.
Wednesday 8th looks set to see a moderate or locally fresh E’ly flow continue with some light wintry showers overnight near SE coasts and a lot of low cloud probably as well , elsewhere clear periods and a moderate frost with icy patches to start in many areas but generally dry away from the SE coasts. Inland by day away from the east and SE coasts after any mist, freezing fog or low cloud clears, generally dry and rather cloudy with some sunny periods .The east & SE may see a few bright periods but further wintry showers as well at times are possible. Some icy patches again as temperatures fall away again inland before midnight. Winds across exposed north western parts of Scotland may be quite strong or gale force SSW’ly by the afternoon with some rain at times here. Temperatures will generally be a cold 0-2C at best in most parts but more like 4C in the far NW and SW and -1C over the upland areas of Scotland.
Thursday 9th looks likely to see high pressure over the central Uk again and so there will be Ely flow continuing in the east, a milder SW’ly flow in the north west with weak fronts likely straddling north western parts of the UK and giving a mix of rain & sleet in places here. A misty start inland further south with freezing fog patches too then generally dry and bright though with a few wintry flurries possible near SE coasts. Another moderate frost developing by the evening away from the far SW, west and NW. Temperatures up to 5-6C in the far north west & the far southwest but generally more like a cold 1-3C for most areas and only -1C over Welsh and northern England hills and the Scottish Highlands
Friday 10th is likely to see a weak front straddling the north but high pressure in control for most parts. An early & late moderate frost in places south of Scotland away from coasts in particular, with some freezing fog patches & icy patches about. Staying mainly rather cloudier in the north west though with some patchy rain & sleet at times with a lot of low cloud and mist about. There will be bright or sunny periods in the south by day but they‘ll probably be quite limited for many, esp near east coasts where there may be a few more wintry showers. Temperatures up to about 4-6C at best in the far SW and west but generally 0-3C and just -1C over high ground, esp the Highlands.
As we move into the weekend it’s uncertain but on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th it looks like we could see high pressure still rather dominant across the west but a low pressure area may swing SE down the north sea disrupt across the SW and sink SE towards the N France. Still some frost possible in places by night in places and maybe some showers at times across parts of the north of the UK. Milder by day than recently overall with temperatures maxing at about 4-6C for many, though perhaps up to 8C in the SW and over high ground more like 0C esp the Highlands.
